4 Tips for Preparing Your HVAC System for Home Renovations

Most types of home renovations generate a lot of dust and particulates, which can make their way into and cause damage to your HVAC system. In today’s post, ACS Air Conditioning Systems shares tips on how to prepare your HVAC system for home renovations.

Plan ahead — Home renovations involve a lot of planning. Factoring in parts of your home that won’t be renovated during this stage is important and can help keep your remodeling schedule on track. Make it a point to show your remodeler where the HVAC units are and discuss how they’re going to be protected during renovation.

Turn off the HVAC system during renovation — If you’re staying in your home for a project that will only take a day or two, turning off the HVAC system can help minimize damage from dust and other particulates. If you must keep it on, make sure your remodeler isolates the areas being worked on. They usually use their own high-powered fans to vent dust through the windows. The indoor unit of a ductless air conditioner can be mostly covered to prevent dust from getting into it.

Clean the work areas daily — Talk to your remodeler about how they intend to keep the work areas clean. Daily cleanups will help reduce dust and debris accumulation. Closing off the work areas can help you move around your home without tracking dust and grit throughout your house. Daily cleaning will also make the final cleanup at the project’s completion much faster and easier.

Try to keep most of the work outdoors — Tasks such as tile and wood cutting are the main culprits for dust and dirt. Your remodeler can set up a work area in the driveway where they can do these tasks to help minimize dust and particulates in your home. Make it a point to ensure these work areas are located away from the HVAC units.
