Typical Causes Behind Your Air Conditioner Shutting Off

Your air conditioner is a complex machinery of components that work together to keep your home cool and comfy. As such, you’ll rely more on your system this summer to beat the hot weather and ensure indoor comfort. But what happens when you notice it shutting off on its own? Local HVAC installation expert ACS Air Conditioning Systems shares some of the usual causes below:

Overflowing Condensate Drain

Moisture that’s accumulated along the evaporator coil drips down into a shallow condensate pan. The water is then pumped out through a drain, but if it gets clogged, it will lead to an overflow from the pan. This can also happen if the water pump motor suddenly malfunctions and is unable to drain the water properly. Such problems will cause your AC’s limit switch to trip to prevent the system from damaging. You’ll need to call a trusted technician who can either unclog the drain or repair the pump motor depending on the issue.

Failed Compressor

The compressor serves an important function in your AC system as it’s mainly responsible for pumping the refrigerant through the system. If this isn’t working, then the refrigerant is unable to change its state and your system shuts off. This is another problem that can’t be solved on your own, so make sure to call in a professional HVAC service technician to resolve it for you.

Tripped Circuit Breaker

Your AC system has motors that can draw on large amounts of electrical power, which can sometimes overload a circuit and cause the breaker to trip. If your AC shuts off by itself, try checking your home’s circuit breaker panel if any of the breakers have tripped. Make sure to reset them before turning on the AC again. If one of the breakers still trips, it could be an electrical problem that needs professional attention.
