Your Year-Round Guide to HVAC Maintenance

Most home utilities generally require maintenance every year–some even every two years or so. HVAC systems, on the other hand, require more care. In today’s post, local HVAC service company ACS Air Conditioning Systems shares a quick guide to HVAC maintenance through all the seasons.

Fall Season

The fall season is the best time to ensure your heating system is ready for winter and replace your air filters. Test-start your heating system at the tail end of fall while taking note of things like grinding and popping sounds or smoke from fuel residue. Test the thermostat by adjusting the temperature levels and making sure the heater is responding to the changes, and troubleshoot if it’s not. Once you’ve confirmed it’s working, program its settings according to your expected daily schedule for the winter. The fall season is also a good time to test your carbon monoxide detectors and replace the batteries if needed.

Winter Season

Your HVAC system isn’t likely to succumb to frost or ice if you’re in the Bay Area, thanks to the relatively mild climate. Nevertheless, it’s good practice during this season to inspect your heat pump or furnace as it’s running, keeping an eye out for leaking refrigerant lines or unusual noises and calling for HVAC repairs as needed. During the last few weeks of winter, check the air filters and replace if full.

Spring Season

There are two key tasks that you should do in late spring as the temperatures start to rise. The first is properly shutting down your heating system. Older furnaces have pilot lights that are lit at all times, which means they’ll continue consuming gas or fuel even when they’re not being used. A proper shutdown procedure includes turning off the pilot light, as well as making sure that no condensation or impurities are left in the furnace. The other task is making sure your air conditioning system is clean. You’ll also want to schedule a maintenance appointment with your HVAC technician if you haven’t done so already.

Summer Season

Summer HVAC maintenance is much like winter maintenance. Keep an eye out for leaking refrigerant lines and similar problems.
